“... the beachhead for new Asian Cinema, where the latest and greatest Asian pop product often makes its first American landfall, is arguably New York's Subway Cinema collective.” (SFGate)

“While other festivals are highlighting Asia in their midnight program with bland horror films…Subway has been serving up one of the most diverse selections of Asian films in the country” (indieWIRE)

Subway Cinema is New York-based film programming, exhibition, and marketing collective, committed to increasing exposure and appreciation for Asia's popular cinema with year-round events and screenings.

Established in 1999, Subway Cinema has played a key role in nurturing the growth of Asian film culture in the U.S. Prior to launching the New York Asian Film Festival in 2002, Subway Cinema was the first in America to recognize the works of Hong Kong directors Johnnie To and Tsui Hark with retrospectives (in 2000 and 2001, respectively), and was instrumental in establishing the New York Korean Film Festival (2001).

Now entering its seventh year, the New York Asian Film Festival is recognized as America's leading festival of popular Asian cinema, receiving attention from the New York Times, TIME, New York magazine, the Village Voice, US News & World Report, the New Yorker, the Economist, Giant Robot, the Variety, the Hollywood Reporter, Impact magazine, Cine21, National Public Radio, The World, WNYC, BBC News, Fuji TV, and others.

Subway Cinema's members are widely recognized by the media as the authorities on Asian genre films. They have made appearances on BBC News, MSNBC’s Scarborough Country, The Brian Lehrer Show (WNYC), The Leonard Lopate Show (WNYC), and Fuji TV. Their writing has also appeared on the pages of Time Out New York, Film Comment, New York Magazine, the Village Voice, Sight & Sound, SOMA, Cine21 (Korea's leading weekly film magazine), and many others. Subway Cinema's Grady Hendrix writes Variety's Asian cinema blog, Kaiju Shakedown.

In 2003, Subway Cinema website was selected "Best Movie Website" by TIME magazine's Richard Corliss.
