Describing himself as an “immature, dumb, slow, and retarded guy,” Giddens Ko is the most popular novelist in Taiwan. A business student in university, he wrote a short story as part of his application to graduate school and discovered that he loved writing. After he faced a slow start finding a publisher, he wrote 14 novels in 14 months and began posting them online under his high school nickname Jiubadao (“Nine Knives”). The novels, which include The Killer Who Never Kills (since optioned by a Hollywood production company) and You Are the Apple of My Eye (100% based on his real life high school romance), became popular and he began writing for a traditional publisher. Since then, he has published 56 books and is aiming to write, as he says, “a couple of hundred” before he’s done. He’s one of the best-selling authors in Taiwan, where his books have been adapted into video games, movies, television shows, and soap operas. You Are the Apple of My Eye was written as an apology to the girlfriend he never apologized to in high school, and he decided to direct it himself because he wanted to try something new. He planned to never direct another movie, but says that in three years he might try another.
